Having a small kitchen can be a nightmare, especially if you choose to ignore this fact and you struggle to fit everything you would have in a normal kitchen in a space twice as small. However, space is only as useful as you make it. If you organize your stuff, even a small kitchen can appear spacious. On that note, it might be time to give up that old dishwasher and replace it with an improved and more compact version. The Whirlpool WDF518SAAM has had numerous positive reviews, yet we wish to analyze it a bit more before deciding whether or not this dishwasher is the best choice for a small kitchen. Given the fact that it costs $799.00, we don’t expect state of the art technologies, but it should be efficient and durable.

Specifications

This dishwasher has a stainless steel tall tub and it features two vinyl racks. The racks are not adjustable, yet the tall tub design allows you to load different sized dishes. The unit also comes with a Large In-the-Rack Silverware Basket and a 1-Fold Down Wire Cup Shelf. The dishwasher has 5 cycles: a normal cycle, a pots&pans cycle, a heavy cycle, a quick wash cycle and a rinse only cycle. It also has a heated dry option and a 2-4-8 hour delay option. When running, it is reasonably quiet, having a 57 dBa level. Due to its resource-efficient wash system, the unit is Energy Star rated. It consumes about 280 kWh per year, and it has a yearly operating cost of 30 dollars if it is used with an electric water heater, or $21 if it is used with a natural gas water heater.

Features

Despite its compact size, this dishwasher is efficient and durable. We like the fact that it has a stainless steel interior, something not very common for Whirlpool dishwashers, especially for those cheaper than $1000. Whirlpool WDF518SAAM features an efficient wash system that reduces resource waste. Moreover, it has a great sound insulating system. The quick wash system is very efficient and it can deal with medium soiled dishes in almost half the time of a normal cycle. We are not very fond of the open controls, which seem quite old-fashioned, yet this is something that we are willing to overlook, considering the unit’s compact size.

Dimensions

The dishwasher is 34 1/2 in. high, 22 in. deep and 17 1/2 wide. With the door open 90 degrees, the dishwasher is 44 1/2 deep. As you can see, it is very compact and it can easily feet into a small kitchen. It is available in three finish choices: black, white and monochromatic stainless steel.

Conclusion

For a small kitchen, this dishwasher is one of the best choices. It has a nice selection of cycles, and though it lacks sophisticated options, it gets the job done. It is covered by a one-year limited warranty, which is not very satisfactory, but this is the standard warranty for most Whirlpool products.

Pros

  • Compact
  • Reasonably quiet
  • Stainless steel interior
  • Good use of interior space

Cons

  • Only one year of warranty
  • Very few wash options
  • Front control panel
